If you mock the Danes, they are more than likely to agree with you. I have never encountered a nation more eager to put its country and fellow countrymen down. Is it a recent thing? Could it be contributed to the last decade of the right-wing nutters, the Danish People's Party, hijacking our flag for a logo, effectively making the word (and by proximity: country) "Danish" synonymous with bigotry and narrow mindedness? I don't know. But it is getting really old, and I just wish we could evolve.
Ah, I needed to get that off my chest, thank you.
(I love my country, there, I said it)
♥

I guess it depends on who you're talking to and what you're talking about...
ReplyDeletePersonally, I will be the first to critise OR defend Denmark/Danish culture/etc., depending on the topic. I think that is pretty normal.
Well, I have never met anyone while traveling or living abroad that were so eager to put their own people and country down. And usually critisism is directed at others, not oneself. The Dane-basher (Danish or foreign) is always better/wiser/holier than the "average Dane", in his own mind at least.
DeleteI think you're pretty lucky to be able to say you love your country, even knowing honestly the good and bad things about it.
ReplyDeleteThe feelings I have for my country is a combination of nostalgia, of the country's history and the promise I see in it. Not necessarily the people who inhabit it. But there are many things to love here, we are lucky, even when it sucks.
Deletebut when that american blog-dude failed to score in cph and called all danish women ugly and looking like pepsi-cans we united in telling him wrong!!! (and wanting this to be an eksampel on danes not putting themselves down I won't mention, that "we" quite agreed on the "danish women talk to much and want's to be right about everything"-part;)
ReplyDeletelots of hugs von muttilove
I can't help but feel like I am missing the first part of the story.. maybe it was cut off by Blogger?
DeleteI have been told that there are serious Dane-bashing parties when expats meet up in Copenhagen. I don't hang out with people who mock me relentlessly, and I can understand why someone with the attitude that Danes are insufferable or whatever, would not receive a warm welcome. We are not all the same, and none of us are perfect, but we are also not the absolute worst.
hugs back at you!
Look at www.expat-blog.com and you'll see quite few Dane bashing expats.
DeleteThank you for the link. I tried to look it up, but couldn't find it, and I think that may be for the best anyway. A life without negativity is so much more fun, I try not to go actively looking for it.
DeleteI agree with Dave. I guess I'm being hard on my country, but they are being hard on me too. They have a hard time with "defectors" especially those who chose to go to the big bad wolf AKA the US...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I sometimes harp on my country too. Or at least the part where humans are involved: moronic politics, stupid tv shows, obnoxious danes. We have it all. But those are just people, we will all wash away with time. The country will stay, that part I love.
Deletethis is the case I was refering to http://ekstrabladet.dk/sex_og_samliv/article1707734.ece it was all over the place last week... I haven't been digging very deep into it, just thought it was quite funny, that eventhough it's like a nationalsport to put down our (in so many ways beautiful, creative and -well yes when compared- tollerant)country we react so strong, when some guy call the danish women ugly... thank you -lovely danish men- for standing up:)
ReplyDeletelove von mutti/muttilove
Ah, I see. Someone left me a link for his "bang guide" on Twitter (utter drivel), and I gave it a quick look. As far as I am concerned he got it all wrong. Or maybe I am just un-Danish for loving Americans and alpha-males? Oh, well. :-)
