A useless currency

Yesterday I got two emails with requests to use my pictures for credit. It happens all the time. My camera is dying, and all these generous offers of photo-credit are useless when it comes to paying rent or buying new camera equipment. There should be a bank for photo-credit deposits, and stores where you could spend it. If you pay with photo-credit, you should also be obligated to accept it as a currency, wouldn't you say? Otherwise you are just telling people that their time and effort are worthless.

As an alternative to this useless currency, I have come up with a fixed low price for commercial use of my pictures online. One of the ladies (employed by our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of all places) took the time to get back to me with this: "thank you, but we found the same motive elsewhere free of charge". Can you believe the nerve? I look forward to the day, someone volunteers to do her job for free. At this pace, it won’t be long.

    1. I have been for years, actually. Like everyone else, I was hoping they would pay the next time, that is how the system works. There is always someone out there willing to give it away, hoping that it will eventually turn into a business. Same thing with intenships.

    2. Hi Sandra,
yes I also let people use my photo for credit, heck i let the LA times use my photos, some magazines might have not given me credit... you are right, we shouldn't let them. As for internship, unless you are 14 and figuring out what kind stuff you might be interested in, I find it really offensive. Basically it is slavery. When i was looking for a job in art, it was all i could find. no way. Paris is waiting for you lady!

    3. Hi Carole,

The internship thing is a monster. Those positions are there to use people and discard of them, when they can't afford to work for free anymore.

In Denmark it is even worse, the government have the right to lease out the unemployed at a seriously discounted rate, stripping them of their benefits and all rights. Naturally the real jobs disappear because what employer wants to pay the decent rate and bother with benefits, when you can get away with slavery? I know it sounds harsh, but that is what is going on. I can't wait for someone up the chain to realise this, and make the changes. Reestablish the actual jobs, and not allow for them to be filled by slaves.

      Uuuuuuh, Paris <3 :-)

  2. Garbage!
So many people can't tell the difference between a photo of something, and a great image...
then, when you can see what makes an image really great, and you try to explain, you sound like some sort of snob...honestly
what am i trying to say here....your work is fantastic and you should be paid for your time...and i think you should even be paid by the city for the work you do to improve it and keep its glory!!!

ps i shopped my way to happiness today - i know what this is saying...but i fall right into that mind-numbing-use-retail-as-temporary-therapy trap

    1. Thank you Shannon, that makes me so happy to hear. I am also curious to see what image she got instead of mine.

And I am too familiar with retail therapy, haha, it has been a long time since I tried it, but I went overboard for years. Way overboard. :D

  3. I retail shop and then unretail shop. Its an interesting concept. Pick something up look where it is made( in which country),what it is made of, think how you will use it and why and then put it back. I live without this! Its very powerful! In North America we have so many retail stores it is very tempting. Good luck.
People don't understand photography and its value. That ministry person is very ignorant.
